Can You Hear Me Now?

It’s always a stitch trying to have a phone conversation with both of my parents simultaneously. I’ll start out talking to my mom, and then when my dad comes around, she’ll call out, “Harry! It’s our older daughter on the line! Pick up the extension.” (Yes, she always has to refer to me as the elder one. I stopped feeling superior about it many years ago).

Then my dad will get on the line, and invariably he’ll have his hearing aid turned up too high. It’s always easy to tell, because of the high-pitched squealing that soon assails our ears. I worry that if it happens too much, my mother and I will soon require hearing aids ourselves. So my father starts fumbling, trying to figure out how to keep participating in the phone conversation while getting the volume on his aid at the right point so that he can still hear but not get all the feedback. Meanwhile, my mother harangues him about how this happens all the time, how he’s hurting everyone else’s ears, and how he ought to remember to take care of it before picking up the phone. Really, so much of what she says is a predictable repeat of prior conversations, I wonder why Dad needs his aid turned up that high in the first place.

Sometimes I speculate how long it would take them to notice if I just put the phone down. I don’t, of course. They do eventually get themselves all set, stop having their conversation with each other, and remember that they wanted to catch up with me, waiting there on the other end. (I am, however, extremely grateful for the mobility provided by cordless phones. Their back-and-forth takes about the same length of time as gathering and starting a load of clothes in the wash.)

I’d like to suggest to my dad to look into one of the more advanced digital hearing aids. They can be made to reduce that annoying feedback that he gets, as well as to enhance the sounds he needs to hear, rather than just providing overall amplification. But I am still their daughter (older one or not), and unless it’s regarding computer use, they’re not likely to take my advice about anything.

So I’ll continue to enjoy my phone calls with them, to be ready to hold the phone away from my ear when Dad picks up, and to remember that my children find plenty to laugh at me for, too.

THE PROBABLE CAUSES OF DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES

Dark circles under the eyes; most of us find ourselves looking into the bathroom mirror and being stared back with panda eyes at one time or another. In fact dark circles can actually make you look a lot older tan you actually are. They make you look tired, ill, and older, so what are the ways of getting rid of them? In order to permanently get rid of dark circles under the eye, the treatments must also be accompanied by good health practices. While there are natural remedies, creams and even medical procedures than can help minimize their appearance, dark circles underneath the eyes can often be avoided by addressing any underlying issues that may be causing them. For most people, this is as easy as treating a cold or a lingering sinus problems as both of these can cause dark circles under the eyes.

Dark circles under the eyes are a common, unattractive and very annoying problem that

affects millions of people. Despite what a lot people think, these dark circles, wrinkles and bags under the eyes are not a result of being tired or stressed. Instead most experts in the dermatology field believe that they are caused by blood vessels which are visible through the thin skin that is found beneath the eyes. The capillaries leak blood close to the skin surface.

The blood will oxidize and turn a bluish, red color. Because the skin under the eyes is very thin dark circles will appear. The lighter the skin and the growing leakage of blood will result in darker circles. The discoloration over time can become a permanent blemish.

Dark circles can be hereditary. Skin color and the thickness of skin are inherited traits and so there is no cure in these instances. However where dark circles are not hereditary they can be due to other factors.

A balanced diet is very important in order to keep your skin in good order. The lack of any of the essential nutrients in your diet may lead to a number of health problems. A lack of iron in the diet will cause a blue color to appear beneath the eyes and since the lack of iron is closely related to anemia, it is often assumed that anemia is the cause of dark circles under the eyes. Dark circles may also become prominent during menstruation and pregnancy due to iron deficiency. As the skin becomes paler, the veins become more visible. This will lead to discoloration around the eyes.

Aging skin will result in dark circles under the eyes. Collagen, which is the part of the skin that tightens the skin cells, gets damaged with aging. As a result of this skin becomes thinner and more transparent, making the blood vessels more prominent and visible from the outside. This is permanent and irreversible damage Allergies and infections have their part to play in the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Whether from dander, pollen or foods, allergic reactions will cause the body’s immune

system to go into overdrive. The blood vessels will expand and become more noticeable.

Eye infections may lead to dark circles. Itchy and watery eyes due to bacterial infection often results in darker eyes. But, such dark circles often disappear once the infection has been cured.

When the body does not receive enough rest, combined with fatigue and overstrain, the skin will become drawn and pale. This will result in the dark circles becoming more obvious.

Advances in Hearing Aids

When I was young, we dreaded the visits of my Great-aunt Julia. She would sit on the sofa, prim and proper, with her orthopedic shoes flat on the floor, her heavy support hose camouflaging whatever part of her legs showed beneath her floral dress, her waist thickened under that dress because of the money belt she always wore, and her white hair wound in braids close to her head. We children would be expected to sit primly as well, politely attempting to hold a conversation with her while our mother prepared a meal. The conversation was made particularly difficult since Aunt Julia was fairly deaf. She wore a hearing aid, but her head would have to be turned just so towards the speaker. We would have to repeat ourselves frequently and wince at the screech of feedback when she would turn it up too far.

Too bad Aunt Julia didn’t live long enough to appreciate the advances in hearing aids today. If she were looking today at the hearing aids South Yorkshire audiologists have available, she would be amazed. No longer would she have to tilt her head, as she might choose a programmable device with separate channels set to enhance different frequencies or the capability of amplifying soft sounds. If Aunt Julia was concerned about appearances (although the support hose might belie that notion), she would have quite the array of choices there, too.

The hearing aids East Sussex doctors might prescribe could range from a traditional behind-the-ear instrument to a virtually invisible one deep inside the ear canal. Known as a “completely in the canal” (CIC) hearing aid, this instrument helps reduce the wearer’s impression of talking in a barrel. It would also have helped save the ears of us children, since using a CIC reduces that lovely squealing feedback noise.

Yes, Aunt Julia would have been amazed and delighted at the advances she could have enjoyed in today’s hearing aids. Perhaps when I’m an elderly aunt myself, I can remember and be understanding with my great-nieces and –nephews. My hearing aids from my East Sussex doctor will be so subtle that my young relatives won’t even know I need them. This, of course, will give them less to laugh about. If I can just remember never to wear orthopedic shoes. . .

waste your time searching for methods how to unblock blocked ears all over the internet any longer. The ways how to unblock blocked ear described on the internet as free tips from regular public and the methods described in the forums do not work and some of them will even cause you ear infections. The best ways to unblock your ears is by sticking to the methods that have being proven to work for decades and are safe to perform from the comfort of your own home.

There are indeed a lot of ways how to unblock blocked ear that I will share with you, I have tried different methods to unblock my ears over the time and I now know what works best for me and will work just as well for you also! You do not need to see a doctor to have your ears unblocked, just follow a couple of simple steps that work for me and you will know how to unblock blocked ear yourself.

I am going to describe one of the methods to help you unblock your ear that works well for me.

* Try using your jaw muscles and open your mouth as wide as you possibly can, this slightly stretches the sinuses open and helps release some of the pressure from your ear. Do not stick those cotton tip ear cleaners in your ears to try and clear out the ear wax, this will push the ear wax a lot deeper in your ear and will cause you a lot more trouble that can later develop in to an infection. There is a saying, do not stick anything smaller than your elbow in your ear! Obviously this means that do not stick anything in your ears, this is the wrong way to clean out the ear wax and trying to unblock your ears. There are certain methods you should use to unblock your ears safely and they are definitely not by sticking things in your ear to try and unblock it.

Stop Ringing in the Ears With Tinnitus Miracle

Do you suffer from tinnitus, that endless buzzing, banging or ringing in the ears that afflicts that can be so hard to eliminate? If that describes our situation, you will want to learn more about Tinnitus Miracle. It is a proven, effective, holistic approach to treating all the varied forms of tinnitus. Even if everything you've tried so far has failed, there's still hope. By the end of the article you'll know why the product I'm recommending could cure you when nothing else has.

Tinnitus Miracle guides you through a holistic three-step program that is designed to finally bring an end to your suffering. This approach differs from the conventional in two primary ways. To start with, this plan acknowledges that many, if not the majority of tinnitus victims have multiple causes for the ringing in their ears.

There is a complex interplay between the various causes, your emotions, and the level of tinnitus noise you are hearing. As a result, treatments that try to deal with one cause of ear ringing at a time may provide no audible improvement, even though they are successfully dealing with one part of the overall problem.

If you, like many, are afflicted with multiple tinnitus causes, a holistic approach is more comprehensive and more likely to get you the results you want. Tinnitus Miracle takes exactly that holistic approach to the problem, allowing it to deal with all aspects of your hearing problem at once. Follow this plan and you'll be an active participant in your own treatment, diagnosing all the factors that are really causing the problem and addressing them all simultaneously.

This approach to a tinnitus cure will take more effort from you than simply going to the doctor for some pill or surgery. But if you've already tried those approaches to a cure, or you would prefer something more holistic and natural, then Tinnitus Miracle could be the final answer to your problem.

How Exercise Can Actually Help Cure Your Tinnitus

Did you know that the amount of exercise you get can have a significant effect on the amount of ringing in your ears? It's true, and in this article I'll explain why.

Before we go further, I want to be clear. The exercise you do doesn't directly affect your tinnitus. However, it has a number of major indirect effects. Here are just some of them.

Regular exercise reduces stress. Researchers have long since proven that a program of regular exercise can lower your levels of stress. If you're stressed, you're more likely to have stress-induced tinnitus. The higher your stress level, the worse things get. And there's more. The higher your stress levels, the more sensitive you are likely to be to your tinnitus, and the more likely you are to be upset. This causes still more stress. Exercise helps short-circuit this ugly cycle.

A regular exercise program will improve your circulation over time. How does this help? Improved circulation helps every part of your body to work better and improves your overall health. Since tinnitus is often the result of some disease or health condition, anything that improves these conditions can reduce your tinnitus. Especially important is the way that exercise improves your circulation. And the healthier your circulatory system is, the lower your blood pressure is likely to be. High blood pressure is often a factor in tinnitus, so reducing it can have real benefits.

We've just talked about two of the ways that getting enough exercise, and the right exercise, can help you reduce your tinnitus symptoms. Exercise clearly needs to be part of any holistic treatment for your condition. There are several more ways that exercise can help you with this condition, but even this limited sampling should show you how important it is for you to be sure you're getting enough exercise.

Is Lipoflavonoid the Best Treatment for Your Tinnitus?

Lipoflavonoid (Lipo) is a proprietary Meniere's disease treatment that is sometimes also used to treat people suffering from tinnitus. But the question is whether or not it really works, and how it compares to other, more holistic treatments for tinnitus. Is Lipoflavonoid or Tinnitus Miracle more likely to provide a complete tinnitus cure for you?

Lipo was developed in the 1960's. Since then, it has been shown to be effective in treating the symptoms of Meniere's disease. One of the symptoms of this disease is a form of tinnitus. According to a research paper published in Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology in 1963, in a study of 197 patients, a significant percentage of those treated with Lipo showed improvements in their hearing. This seems to make a powerful case for using Lipo to treat other forms of tinnitus as well. But there's one little fly in the ointment.

In 1966, the Audiology Center of Walter Reed Hospital conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the effects of the active ingredient of Lipo on people with hearing loss that was not associated with Meniere's Disease. Of all the study participants who took Lipo, how many showed improvement? None of them. The only person in the study who did show improvement was in the group given a placebo! As you can imagine, this result was very disappointing to everyone involved.

To summarize, people whose tinnitus is related to Meniere's Disease may benefit from the use of Lipoflavonoid. People whose tinnitus comes from other causes will probably not benefit from using this product.

Compare the Lipo results to those from Tinnitus Miracle. With its holistic approach to addressing all the varied causes of each person's tinnitus, the product has already helped thousands with a tinnitus treatment that can lead to a complete cure. Why settle for a treatment that covers only one tiny bit of the spectrum of tinnitus causes when you can hit them all at once?

Cure Your Tinnitus - First You Must Understand Your Subjective Tinnitus

If you want lasting tinnitus relief, you need to understand which of the many forms of tinnitus you have. One common type is Subjective Tinnitus. This article explains what that is, why having it doesn't mean you're crazy, and points you to a holistic guide that can help you cure this and any other form of tinnitus you might be afflicted with.

If you suffer from subjective tinnitus, you're hearing things that no one else can. That doesn't mean that these sounds are imaginary or 'all in your head.' It just means that no one else can hear them or explain where they are coming from. You're definitely not crazy or anything like that.

Sometimes, this form of tinnitus is actually caused by the real and normal sounds your body makes, sounds that people normally just don't hear. The sounds that you are hearing in this case are so quiet that no one else can hear them, even your doctor. Because your doctor can't detect these sounds or explain where they're coming from, they are considered subjective instead of objective tinnitus.

But the most common form of subjective ringing in the ears isn't some real sound that no one else can hear. Instead, the sounds you are hearing are actually some sort of malfunction in your auditory or nervous system. In these cases, one or the other system is sending your brain nerve impulses that look to your brain like the messages created by sounds, even though they aren't triggered by any actual sound.

For victims of subjective tinnitus, there's both good and bad news. The bad news is that you definitely have a problem that needs to be resolved. The good news is that this is a real and treatable condition, not just something in your head.

Why Holistic Tinnitus Cures Are Best

For many people, tinnitus has proven to be a difficult condition to treat. No matter what they try, these people have been unable to end the infuriating ringing in the ears that plagues them. Despite the variety of tinnitus cures available today, a significant percentage of tinnitus sufferers remain unable to get relief form their symptoms. This article explains why this is the case, why a holistic approach may be the only hope for many sufferers, and points you to a proven holistic tinnitus treatment.

Many different approaches to treating tinnitus are available, ranging from acupuncture to drugs, to masking the sounds with noise generators, to full-blown surgery. You would think that with so many different approaches being tried, a single solution would be found. But it hasn't worked out that way. Many sufferers have tried all of the tinnitus cures listed here and more, yet still suffer from unendurable ringing in the ears. Why is this so? Why don't we have a single approach to a tinnitus cure?

While the details are complex, the short answer is that for many sufferers, their tinnitus has multiple causes. Because a wide variety of conditions can cause tinnitus symptoms, a single straightforward treatment that works for one person may be totally useless for another. To make things even more challenging, when more than one tinnitus cause is present, they can interact with each other, making a simple solution unlikely.

Conventional, one thing at a time approaches to tinnitus often fail because of the way the different causes interact. That's why people who haven't found a cure so far are turning toward holistic approaches to the problem. By treating all their forms of tinnitus at once, you can greatly increase the chances of a cure, even when more conventional approaches have failed.

Bluetooth and Hearing Aids

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that connects electronic devices to transfer information. For hearing aids this means that you can finally connect directly with your cell phone, television, computer, iPod, or any other Bluetooth enabled device. This means that you can hear your TV or cell phone as if you were directly wired to them without any sort of background interference. While its not a necessary option, it is very nice and extremely convenient - especially in the car.

The connection is accomplished by using a another piece of equipment to link the cellphone to the hearing aids. These devices are generally worn around the neck, but a few manufacturers have designed devices that you can carry in your pocket. The device that you wear around your neck has a microphone in it so that you can talk on the phone. The wire around your neck is what sends the sound to the hearing aid.

Depending on your lifestyle, Bluetooth may be a great option for you. If you talk on your cell phone a lot, it will be a great option for you. If you don't need Bluetooth for the cellphone, you probably don't need it for other things like TV or iPods. For many patients the extra equipment is a little overwhelming and many do well on the TV and Cell phone without Bluetooth. Bluetooth is simply for connection to other devices only and doesnt make the hearing aids any louder, but it is a nice convenience factor if you spend a lot of time on the cell phone.

Digital Hearing Aid accessories are excellent tools, but only to those who really need them. I dont typically recommend that you buy any extra accessories like Bluetooth, FM systems, or remote controls unless you really need them. They are one more thing to purchase, one more thing that could break, and one more battery to change or recharge. You can always add them later if you need to.

If you live in a state or region where "hands-free" laws are in effect, then you should take a closer look at it. If this is the case, then Bluetooth may be a great option for you while you are in your car driving down the road. While Bluetooth is a great option and extremely convenient, the main goal of a hearing aid is to reconnect you with your family, friends, and loved ones so that you can experience life to the fullest again!

Tinnitus has been known to cause hearing impairment which can not be reversed, this will mean that the sooner you can deal with the underlying problem the better.

There are actually two forms of tinnitus though subjective tinnitus is much more common then objective tinnitus. Subjective tinnitus occurs and only the person suffering from tinnitus hears a ringing or bussing. With objective tinnitus the person with tinnitus hears a noise but so do other around that person. The Best Hearing Aids?

Hearing Aids have advanced tremendously even since just a few years ago and there are even more options now than ever! How do you know which ones are the best though? Your friend told you that they love their hearing aid, but the office you went to suggested another type and another one of your friends is wearing yet a different type altogether. If you go to the manufacturer's websites they willl all claim that theirs is the best.

With so many different opinions, it's difficult for you to decide what to buy. The best hearing instrument for you is one that is within your budget, helps you hear as well as possible, and is comfortable to wear. Brands and technology don't matter as much as your own preferences. If a hearing aid has the most amazing technology available, but you won't wear it because it looks horrible or you can't stand the way it sounds, that hearing aid is no good for you! If you can't afford it, then it's no good either. A hearing professional will guide you to the hearing device that best meets your hearing needs and fits within your lifestyle.

The real decision is not what hearing aid to buy, but where to buy it. There are 4 types of places where you can buy hearing instruments: Private Practice Hearing Professionals (Audiologists and Hearing Aid Specialists), Online companies such as AidRight.com, ENT Physicians, and Chain stores like Miracle Ear and Beltone.

Private Practice Hearing Professionals:
1. Usually they are the best trained and most experienced.
2. They generally carry a wide variety of hearing aids from different manufacturers.
3. Prices are more reasonable as a rule.
4. More customer service oriented, you are usually dealing with the owner.

Online companies:
1. These are excellent if they refer you to a professional and their services are included in the price.
2. You will usually get the best price.
3. Do not buy direct online or mail order without professional face to face service. You would be throwing your money out the window.

ENT offices:
1. They are often too busy to provide the necessary time and attention, the audiologists that work there typically don't specialize in hearing aids.
2. They are hard to get in to see on short notice.
3. You can get medical treatment there if needed.
4. Prices tend to be higher in general.

Chain stores:
1. Chain stores usually only carry 1 brand of hearing aid, so they have fewer choices.
2. Only a Chain store can service their hearing aid. If they go out of business in your area, or you move, you're stuck with a hearing you cannot get serviced!

Hearing Aids - 5 Ways to Avoid Getting Ripped Off

ways that you can do so that you can avoid getting ripped off:

1) Overpaying. This is probably the most common mistake. We have heard the horror stories of people paying $8,000 or more for a pair of hearing aids. One of the ways you can avoid this, is to simply tell the specialist that you want to think about hearing aids before you buy them and then go shopping around. They shouldn't have a problem with you doing that. Ask them for how much they will sell you the aid and what's included such as warranty, return privilege, return fees, loss and damage fees, service fees, etc. Be specific as to the make and model so you can make certain you're comparing apples to apples.

2) Buying More Hearing Aid Than Necessary - Some offices only seem to tell you about the latest, most advanced hearing devices on the market. They don't mention that in many cases these products are more hearing instrument technology than you really need. Sometimes your lifestyle or hearing loss is such that you will not benefit any more from the most advanced hearing aid circuitry than something less advanced. Most offices allow trial periods on hearing devices. Unless you just know you want the top of the line, try hearing aids a step or two down first. Then, if you feel you still need more help, you can upgrade. Make sure they give you a new trial period!

3) Not Buying a Good Enough Hearing Aid - Just as buying top of line is not always best, buying a bottom of line hearing aid can also be a mistake. Often it would be well worth a couple of hundred dollars extra to buy a hearing aid more suitable to your needs. It will make your hearing aid experience, and your life, much better.

4) Buying Under Pressure - No one should buy a hearing aid under pressure, yet many people are pushed into the purchase by slick salespeople or "Factory Representatives". The salesperson tells you that if you don't act now you will miss out on the incredible deal they are offering "today only.If you come back to them in a couple weeks, they would probably offer the same deal! They are not going to turn down the sale just because you want to think about it! Unfortunately, high-pressure sales is only about one thing: making money, not helping you hear well.

5) Sales Gimmicks - Hearing aid trade-ins (no such thing! Have you ever seen a used hearing aid store?), factory authorized sales, and most other discount offers are gimmicks designed to trick you into thinking you are getting a great deal. Sometimes the hearing aids are marked up so they can be discounted to the regular price. If the coupon is real you should be able to present it to them after they quote the price. If a coupon says you must present it before they see you, it's probably a gimmick.

Trade-ins are always not real. None of the manufacturers offer any discount to the dealer for a trade-in. There is no trade-in program for hearing aids. I have never seen one... and I bet you haven't either? If you have old hearing aids there's no reason they should take them from you. You should hang on to them as a back-up.

Be especially cautious of anyone advertising that they want you to take part in a new technology trial and get your opinion. The biggest problem with this marketing ploy is that if you lose the hearing aid while participating in the trial, you have to pay for it! Programs such as this are just another way to get you to try new hearing aids and sell them to you. Usually they will tell you the regular price is some crazy amount like $6000 per hearing aid, but because you participated in the trial you can buy it at 1/2 off. If you shopped around you would likely find the same hearing aid for less without all the deception. Sometimes manufacturers do offer trials on their products, but they organize these research trials at their manufacturing plants where they can monitor all of the results!

Follow these steps and find a good local professional and you will be on the road to good hearing!

Better control with today’s digital hearing aids

Years ago, I worked in a school where our boss—the principal—had suffered from hearing loss. Elaine wore one of the newer models of hearing aids available at the time, so it was fairly discreet, but we teachers were aware of it. I’m ashamed to admit that we took advantage of that knowledge, too. During staff meetings, we would jockey for position on her weak side, knowing we could get away with chatting to colleagues as long as Elaine wasn’t looking. Yes, I admit it: we were as disrespectful of her sometimes as our students were of us. It was probably a good thing that the principal’s use of a hearing aid was not common knowledge, or the students, too, might have learned to take advantage of it, especially if they had ever witnessed the teachers doing so.

With today’s technology, we rowdy teachers would be out of luck. Digital hearing aids currently on the market feature significant advances in signal processing. What that means is that Elaine could enjoy increased audibility of the sounds she wants to hear without experiencing discomfort from a high intensity of unwanted sounds. Low-level environmental sounds can be reduced in intensity, while sounds of interest—like chatty teachers’ voices—come through loud and clear. In fact, today’s hearing aids can differentiate between the sound of voices and background noise, helping improve speech recognition.

Additionally, Elaine would have options in hearing aid design that would make it difficult, if not impossible, for those she worked with to even realize she was wearing a hearing aid. One of the more popular designs is the behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid, which technology has rendered so small as to be easily hidden by a hairstyle. Designs become more discreet from there, with in the ear (ITE), in the canal (ITC) and completely in the canal (CIC) options. Hearing aids that fit completely in the canal are the smallest of all, virtually invisible to anyone who is not staring right at your ear.

So my fond memories of slightly rebellious staff meetings would probably not be possible today. If I were in a similar situation, I’d have to discover new ways to rebel. Since students constantly discover creative new ways to thwart authority, surely we teachers would manage to do so.

Rock bands, hearing protections, and teenage boys

One of the things I enjoy most about the creative concept behind Rock Band, Guitar Hero, and similar video games is the music that kids are exposed to. My teenage sons have become immersed in the music of bands from the 1970s and 1980s. In other words, good music. The playlists on their MP3s mimic my own. Music provides us a touchstone to connect upon at a time when so much else in their lives seems foreign to me.

Another benefit to the resurgence in this music’s popularity is the possibility of attending concerts by these classic rock bands. Ironically enough, my sons get excited about going to see the same bands that I enjoyed when I was their age. I love to point out to them that the first rock concert I attended was one by Aerosmith. (This does not actually make me look cool in their eyes, but I try). What I don’t usually tell my teens is that I spent that first concert fairly miserable. I felt bombarded by noise, and of course I hadn’t brought hearing protections of any sort. Instead, I leaned forward with my elbows on the rail, trying to look enthralled so that I could be more subtle about sticking my fingers in my ears.

These days I’m older and wiser. I still enjoy the same music, and still thrill to the pulsing excitement of attending live shows by many of my favorite bands. However, I wear ear defenders when I attend, a wonderful pair that allows me to carry on conversations and enjoy the music without damaging my hearing when it gets blaringly loud. My sons find themselves frequently attending concerts with Mom or Dad in tow: vaguely embarrassing, but worth it when the folks are footing the bill. Plus, we often discover a large number of attendees who look to be in the same situation. (A recent Pearl Jam concert I went to with my 15-year-old practically looked like a mother-son soiree.) When my sons are with me, I can insist that they wear ear defenders themselves. When they go to a concert without me, all I can do is remind them on their way out the door. They tend to grumble about it, then sheepishly admit they were glad to have them once they get home. Hopefully they’ll make it through to adulthood with their hearing intact.

Just because they can hear doesn’t mean they’ll actually listen to me, but at least our mutual love of rock music gives us a starting point for conversation.
